President Gitanas Nausėda opened a conference “Together for Europe’s Recovery” held to discuss the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The conference provided insights into Germany’s role in the face of European and global challenges, ways to promote Europe’s green deal and green economy, as well as the cultural perspectives of the Old Continent in terms of resilience, sustainability and sovereignty were discussed.
“The German Presidency and the European Commission have a huge responsibility to speed up the decision-making so that we can implement the EU's strategic agenda as well as use all means in response to the pandemic as soon as possible. Most importantly, however, as the motto of the German Presidency states, we work “together for Europe’s recovery”. Only by working together, we can make truly strong decisions to respond to all challenges”, said the President as he welcomed the participants at the Presidential Palace.
According to the President, the ongoing health and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has confirmed that our strength lies in timely, coordinated and joint EU action. The President said that the EU was sometimes rightly criticized for taking decisions too slowly and too late however, the Member States demonstrated solidarity and made necessary solutions at the EU level which made it possible not only to respond to the immediate needs of the health sector and business, but also to ensure that hundreds of thousands of EU citizens had jobs and repatriated safely.
In July, after intense and record-long negotiations, an agreement was reached on the next multiannual financial framework and the Economic Recovery Plan. “I highly value the personal leadership that German Chancellor Angela Merkel demonstrated in search for a compromise that is crucial for the EU. This is an important step in ensuring long-term economic recovery and growth. At the same time, we get solid tools for green and digital transformation to ensure a global role for the EU and an effective neighborhood policy. We should not miss a special opportunity to pursue an ambitious EU agenda”, the President said.
In his speech, the President identified a number of crucial steps that had to be taken in the future, including but not limited to building resilience, digital and green transition, and strengthening the EU’s global role.
The President wished Germany every success in its ambitious presidency program which focused not only on economic recovery but also on strengthening the global role of the EU, social cohesion, and the rule of law, reaching agreement with the United Kingdom in the interests of the EU and the EU’s neighborhood policy.
