Thursday, September 5, Brussels – During the first working visit to Brussels, President Gitanas Nausėda met with President-elect of the European Council Charles Michel.
EU agenda and multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027 were discussed at the meeting. The President took the opportunity to remind of Lithuania’s energy security goals and emphasized the threat that the Ostrovets nuclear power plant poses to the entire EU. The President expressed hope that the President-elect of the European Council would support the Baltic States in the debate with Belarus on elimination of drawbacks identified during EU stress tests in the Ostrovets nuclear power plant.
The meeting also focused on climate change issues, which require systematic implementation of change by all EU member states. Climate change is one of the strategic priorities of the EU, to which Lithuania attaches particular importance.
