Thursday, December 17, Brussels – President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with British Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of the European Council. The meeting was held on the initiative of the British Prime Minister.
David Cameron presented in detail Britain’s proposals on reforming the European Union to the Lithuanian President – a key topic on the summit’s agenda.
According to the President, Lithuania is ready to seek solutions to strengthen the EU. We support Britain’s proposals to enhance the competitiveness of the whole Union and reduce regulatory burdens on business, the President said. However, the free movement of persons and non-discrimination against EU citizens – the founding principles of the EU – cannot be questioned.
Dalia Grybauskaitė emphasized that Lithuania and other EU countries were ready to listen to Britain’s proposals. It is important that decisions are based on the provisions of existing EU Treaties.
The European Council will further continue discussions about the UK’s proposals and seek agreement at a summit in February 2016.
