President Gitanas Nausėda is on a working visit to Germany. On the second day of the visit, the President of Lithuania, together with the Presidents of Germany, Latvia, and Estonia, attended the events to mark to the 30th anniversary of restored diplomatic relations.
“I am delighted to say that since the restoration of independence, we have always felt Germany’s support, especially on the path of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. We have restored the historical bond that was broken during the Soviet occupation. Germany has made a significant contribution for Lithuania to return to the family of European nations,” Gitanas Nausėda said.
The Presidents of four countries discussed topical regional issues – migration, security and defense as well as relations with the neighboring countries.
The national leaders also dedicated some time to discuss the future of the European Union. President Nausėda stressed the importance of ensuring the widest possible involvement of citizens in the debate on the future of Europe and the implementation of EU strategic agenda. “The green and digital transition, reducing social exclusion, increasing societal resilience, openness to our neighbors, especially in the East, is important to us,” President Nausėda said. He underscored that the EU should continue its consistent support for the euro integration of the Eastern Partnership countries.
At the meeting, President Nausėda expressed gratitude to Chancellor Merkel for Germany’s participation in enhancing security and defense of the Baltic region. Germany leads NATO eFP Battle Group in Lithuania and participates in the Baltic Air Policing mission.
On the initiative of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany, President Gitanas Nausėda of Lithuania, President Egils Levits of Latvia, and President Kersti Kaljulaid of Estonia were invited to attend the events to mark the 30th anniversary of restored diplomatic relations in Berlin.
