The President is invited to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague

Thursday, May 30, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė has received an official invitation from the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, to attend the Nuclear Security Summit to be held next March in The Hague.

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands in his letter thanked President Dalia Grybauskaitė for her personal contribution to calling the international community's attention to nuclear security problems and to making the world a safer place.

At the Hague Summit, which is organized at the initiative of U.S. President Barack Obama, the heads of state from all over the world will discuss how to fight nuclear terrorism and ensure nuclear security. It is yet another opportunity for Lithuania to draw the attention of other countries to unsecure nuclear power plants developed in its neighborhood.

This is the second high-level meeting on nuclear security to which the President is invited. At the summit in Seoul in 2012, President Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that the highest international security standards must apply to all nuclear power plants worldwide.

At the President's initiative, the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence was set up in Medininkai in March last year. In 2013, the U.S. and Lithuanian foreign ministers signed an agreement for strengthening cooperation on countering nuclear smuggling.
