On Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda started his working visit to Moldova. The President met with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, in Chișinău. The two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine, the security situation in the region, and Moldova’s prospects for European integration.
In his meeting with President Maia Sandu, the Lithuanian President pointed out that the tense security situation in the region and worrying provocations in Transnistria should not become a setback for Moldova’s path towards European integration. According to Gitanas Nausėda, Moldova is an EU associated partner and should take full advantage of all opportunities for cooperation. The President stressed that Lithuania strongly supports Moldova’s aspirations for EU integration and expressed his belief in the country’s European future.
President Gitanas Nausėda and the Moldovan leader also discussed the issue of energy independence from Russia. The Lithuanian President highlighted that diversification of energy sources, investments in green energy and energy efficiency would prevent energy blackmail by Russia and would help ensure Moldova’s energy security.
“Russia uses energy as blackmail. Lithuania has faced this in the past and has learned its lessons, we are therefore ready to help Moldova and share our experience," the President said.
The Presidents also discussed solidarity with Ukraine in hosting war refugees. The Lithuanian leader stressed that Lithuania would continue its humanitarian, political and economic support to Moldova.
