The President goes for a working visit to Brussels and Aachen


Tuesday, May 27, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė has left for a working visit to Brussels where she will attend an informal meeting of the European Council.

In the capital of Belgium, EU heads of state or government will discuss the outcome of elections to the European Parliament held last Sunday, the composition of the new European Commission and its immediate tasks of importance for the future of European citizens.

Other items on the agenda of the European Council meeting include security situation in the EU's eastern neighborhood, developments in Ukraine and presidential elections held in this country last weekend with Petro Poroshenko elected in the first round.

The President underlined that democratic elections in Ukraine, with the voter turnout making about 60 percent of the voting eligible population, demonstrated strong determination of Ukrainian people to seek stability, restore peace and order in their state.

On Wednesday, May 28, the President will travel from Brussels to Aachen. The President as laureate of the Charlemagne Prize 2013 has been invited to attend this year's award ceremony and related events. The prestigious award, also known as "Oscar in Politics", this year will be presented to European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.

During her visit in Aachen, President Grybauskaitė also plans to hold bilateral meetings with Prime Ministers of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
