President Gitanas Nausėda said that discussions on the future of the EU should be based on the principles of a welfare state as well as fundamental values, development of research and innovation, implementation of the Green Deal and fostering of safe neighborhood as he opened the video conference My Europe – Building the Future Together.
“Just recently, I introduced the Vision of Welfare Lithuania. I emphasized that our country must be strong, green and innovative EU member state. It is my firm belief that Lithuania’s success and well-being will depend in major part on the progress that the European Union makes. We all would like the EU to be competitive, strong, powerful and resilient to current and future challenges. The Conference on the Future of Europe should contribute to this”, the President said.
The President highlighted that it was very important to involve citizens into the discussions on the future of the EU. “We need to strengthen the link between Europeans and the institutions that serve them”, said the President stressing that the future EU policy should be concrete and result-oriented.
President Nausėda added that our future would depend on the decisions that the EU was currently taking and would take in the fight against geopolitical and migration challenges, cyber security and hybrid threats as well as the pandemic. It is highly important to take advantage of the situation and consolidate efforts so that initiatives aimed at combating climate change, the development of science, innovation and digitalization, as well as the deepening of the internal market, strengthen the EU’s position in the world.
