The President: Europe must be proactive in responding to economic crises

Wednesday, October 27, Vilnius - Having finished the working visit in China, President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė left for Brussels to attend the European Summit. The European Council meets for two days to discuss such issues as coordination of economic policies and tackling climate change and to reach common positions to be held in meetings with the United States, Russia, Ukraine and G20 (the group of finance ministers and central bank governors of the most-developed economies of the world).

In the European Council meeting, Lithuania will support proposals developed by a special working group concerning coordination of economic policies.

"The lesson learned during the economic crisis reminds the folk wisdom which suggests starting preparing the sledge in summer. To prevent painful consequences of the crisis in the future, we must take all measures that are currently available to us to strengthen the coordination of economic policies of the EU and to set up mechanisms to help ensure long-term financial sustainability and mitigate adverse effects of the economic crisis for the EU Member States," the President says.
