President Gitanas Nausėda had a conference call with President of Iceland Guðni Jóhannesson. In their conversation, the Presidents focused on the cooperation of the Nordic and Baltic countries in dealing with the pandemic as well as testing and vaccination strategies.
The Presidents shared views on the possibility to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the recognition of the independence of the Baltic States and the establishment of diplomatic relations with Iceland which is scheduled for 2021. The President of Iceland invited President Nausėda to visit Iceland on this special and momentous anniversary for our country.
“Lithuania always remembers Iceland’s contribution to our independence aspirations. Your country heard our call when we needed it the most. We still recall Iceland’s support today, as we actively advocate at the international level for democratic values and human rights in Belarus”, Lithuania’s President said.
Lithuania and Iceland stress the importance of solidarity among the NB8 countries and the need to strengthen cooperation in the fields of regional security, defense, and the fight against hybrid and cyber threats.
Iceland actively contributes to ensuring the security of the Baltic States and deploying troops to NATO battle group of the enhanced forward presence battalion.
President Guðni Jóhannesson pays special attention to the history of the Baltic States. In 1997, in the University of Iceland he defended his master’s thesis on the topic of restoration of independence of the Baltic States “Iceland’s Support for the Independence of the Baltic States: 1990-1991”. The President also actively maintains and fosters relations with the Lithuanian community in Iceland.
