On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, László Kövér, to discuss bilateral relations, regional security and EU migration policy.
At the meeting, the President emphasized that Lithuania appreciated Hungary’s contribution to the security of the Baltic region – troop deployment for exercises, participation in the NATO Air Policing mission and the NATO Integration Force Unit.
Gitanas Nausėda underscored that Lithuania sought more active business ties with Hungary and saw huge potential for cooperation in innovative and high added value sectors.
The President and the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly also discussed planned changes to the EU legislation on migration, asylum and border protection. “The lessons of hybrid attacks by third countries have demonstrated the need to improve the existing EU legislation to ensure proper protection of the EU’s external borders and effective use of EU migration and asylum procedures in practice,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda and László Kövér also discussed the Eastern Partnership. The President stressed that a political declaration, setting long-term objectives and encouraging associated countries to continue the process of implementing reforms and sectoral integration, should be adopted at the EU Eastern Partnership Summit to be held this coming December.
