The President congratulates Ukrainian people on democratic parliamentary elections
Monday, October 27, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to Ukrainian people who expressed their will in snap elections to Ukraine's parliament on Sunday.
According to the President, the Ukrainian people who are fighting for the freedom of their country have resolutely chosen a European path built on democratic reforms. It is a very important step in restoring stability and ensuring the well-being of the people of Ukraine, as well as building a strong and unified state.
The President has noted that although the election took place under very difficult conditions - Crimea is occupied and in some part of eastern Ukraine people were obstructed by the foreign state-backed separatists to express their will - the Ukrainian government managed to hold transparent and fair democratic elections.
The President also underlined that elections initiated by separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk on November 2 would be unlawful and, based on the decision of the European Council taken on October 24, would not be recognized by the European Union. According to the President, elections in the whole territory of Ukraine should take place in conformity with Ukrainian legislation and the Constitution of Ukraine.
