On behalf of the Lithuanian people and on his own behalf, President Gitanas Nausėda extended congratulations to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of the Portuguese Republic on Portugal Day and wished the people of this country continued peace, well-being, and prosperity.
The President stressed that Lithuania and Portugal were bound by excellent bilateral relations, shared values and mutual understanding when working together at the international level. Portugal – Lithuania’s ally in NATO – significantly contributes to the security of the Baltic region. This summer, the Portuguese troops will be involved in the implementation of NATO’s security ensuring measures in Lithuania and will once again join the Baltic Air Policing mission in the autumn.
“We cooperate effectively in the European Union in addressing relevant political, economic and security matters. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Portugal on its successful presidency of the Council of the European Union and its contribution to responding to the challenges created by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Portugal also understands and supports our position on the threat posed by the unsafe Ostrovets nuclear power plant, “ the President wrote.
In his letter of congratulations on national day, Gitanas Nausėda expressed a strong hope for bilateral relations between Lithuania and Portugal to be further enhanced by people-to-people contacts and mutually beneficial initiatives in business, science, education, and innovation.
