The President congratulated Iceland on independence anniversary


On behalf of the Lithuanian people, President Gitanas Nausėda extended sincere congratulations to President Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson of Iceland on 76th independence anniversary.

“The people of Lithuania will always remain grateful to Iceland who was the first to recognize our independence 30 years ago – which strengthened the spirit and confidence of all Lithuanians moving decisively forward on the difficult path of reestablishing national statehood. Mr. President, I deeply appreciate your personal concern and interest in the history of Lithuania, your sensitive attitude to its fate through full support to our choice of freedom”, the President said in the message of congratulations.

The President highlighted that thirty years on Lithuania and Iceland enjoy a strong relationship and work successfully together in the framework of Nordic-Baltic cooperation. Iceland is a committed ally who understands the security challenges faced by Lithuania and contributes to strengthening its security. Lithuania highly appreciates Iceland’s contribution to the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence in Lithuania as a sign of genuine friendship and solidarity and a significant input to ensuring security in the Baltic region.

According to the President, close friendship ties maintained by the people of Lithuania and Iceland open avenues for wide-ranging cooperation in business, science, education, tourism, culture, and many other areas, making the bond between the two nations increasingly stronger.

President Gitanas Nausėda wished the President and the people of Iceland strong health, continued success and prosperity.
