Wednesday, December 23, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to His Imperial Majesty Akihito on his birthday and Japan's national holiday.
In her message of congratulations, President Grybauskaitė underlined that it was symbolic that Emperor Akihito's accession to the throne almost coincided with the restoration of Lithuanian independence. Over the past twenty years, the President noted, the two countries came to know each other more deeply and their contacts evolved into new forms of cooperation.
"The joint efforts by Lithuanian and Japanese experts in rebuilding Afghanistan's Ghor Province serve as the best evidence of our growing bilateral ties. I would like to thank you most sincerely for Japan's activities in Ghor Province. I firmly believe that the close spiritual bond existing between Lithuania and Japan since the times of Chiune Sugihara will become more diverse and bring our two nations still closer together," President Grybauskaitė wrote in the letter.
The President expressed her confidence that Lithuania and Japan, even though located tens of thousands of kilometers apart from each other, would continue working shoulder to shoulder to promote peace, democracy and general well-being of the people. Security, sustainable development and balanced economic growth were possible only through close international cooperation.
"I would like to ensure you that I will seek by all possible means to further develop political, economic and cultural links between Lithuania and Japan and to make certain that our bilateral relationship should contribute to the ultimate goals of the international community," the President wrote.
