President Gitanas Nausėda – currently in Brussels for a European Council meeting – took part in the evening session devoted to migration issues and relations with Belarus.
The President underscored the challenges posed by Belarus at the European Union's external border and the growing flows of illegal migrants. “Due to the migrant path opened by the Belarusian regime, we are facing unprecedented migration pressure. I would like to emphasize the need to strengthen the monitoring and control of the EU’s external borders, especially its eastern border,” the President said.
According to Gitanas Nausėda, we must continue to call on the Belarusian regime to end repressions and human rights abuses and to hold democratic elections as soon as possible. “I welcome not only additional sanctions on Belarusian regime officials in response to the hijacking of the Ryanair plane and the deteriorating human rights situation, but also the decision on sectoral sanctions approved today,” the President said.
The President also emphasized the importance of supporting democratic change in Belarus and welcomed the €3 billion plan for democratic Belarus prepared by the European Commission.
