The President calls for joint action to ensure Baltic security

Saturday, October 24, Riga - "The three Baltic States must act together in requesting their Alliance partners to work out, as soon as possible and taking into account the new threats, NATO defense plans for the Baltics," President Grybauskaitė said.

In her speech delivered at the Riga Security Conference "Transatlantic Agenda 2010 - A Baltic Vision", Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that the ever changing world was facing new and changing threats: terrorism, cyber and information attacks, and energy security.

"Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are full members of the Alliance and active security providers participating in NATO's operation in Afghanistan and other missions. Therefore, we deserve to have security guarantees and concrete defense plans for our countries," President Grybauskaitė said.

Dalia Grybauskaitė pointed out that the three Baltic presidents agreed on making joint efforts to ensure the region's security.

Speaking about the Euro-Atlantic dimension, the President emphasized that the relationship between the European Union and the United States would be of primary importance for the security of the Baltic region and whole of Europe.

Therefore, Lithuania was ready to be actively engaged in the process of their formation.

Taking part in the conference were also President Valdis Zatlers of Latvia and President Toomas Hendrik Ilves of Estonia.

Earlier in the day, the Presidents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia held a trilateral meeting to discuss ways of building the Baltic energy market and the agenda for the European Council meeting scheduled for next week in Brussels .
