Sunday, April 18, Krakow - President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė attended the State Funeral of President Lech Kaczynski and First Lady Maria Kaczynska, who died in an air crash near Smolensk last week.
"In the face of this tragic loss, Lithuania mourns together with the Polish nation. Poland has lost a great man, Lithuania has lost a good and true friend. The death of the President of Poland and other people that were with him is a great loss not only to Poland but also for the whole Europe," President Dalia Grybauskaitė said.
The President of Lithuania stressed that Lithuanian and Polish nations were the closest neighbors already as early as 600 years ago and the unity of the two nations and their common victory in the Battle of Grunwald had had huge importance for the whole Europe. According to the President, Lithuanians and Poles are united not only by their common past but also by their future in a free and democratic Europe.
"I am deeply convinced that the ideas cherished and deeds accomplished by President Lech Kaczynski will never be forgotten and that our common initiatives to carry out projects important to the whole region and the European Union will serve to strengthen our strategic partnership further," President Dalia Grybauskaitė said.
The President expressed deep condolences on behalf of herself and all people of Lithuania to the families of the gone and to the whole Polish nation.
