During the meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda discussed bilateral relations in the fields of defense, security, migration and the EU agenda.
The meeting focused on defense and security. The President thanked the Italian Prime Minister for the efforts to strengthen the security of the Baltic States and participation in the Baltic air policing mission where Italians would take a rotation in 2020.
The President also welcomed the Italian initiative to deploy troops in the NATO enhanced forward presence force in the Baltic States, participation in the military exercise held by the Alliance in Lithuania as well as their contribution to the operations of NATO Energy Security Center.
Cyber security was also addressed during the meeting. “We would like to cooperate more closely with Italy on cyber security, especially in the development of EU cyber rapid response teams”, said President Gitanas Nausėda as he invited Italy to complete the procedure of joining this Lithuanian-led project.
The leaders also exchanged views on the migration situation in Europe, the EU’s strategic agenda, multiannual financial framework, climate change commitments as well as economic cooperation in financial technology and cyber security.
