The President and the First Lady attended the Emperor’s inauguration


Tuesday, October 22, Tokyo – President Gitanas Nausėda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė attended the ceremony of the enthronement of Japanese Emperor Naruhito. The President and the First Lady extended congratulations to the Emperor and listened to his inaugural speech.

“We wish the Emperor, sovereign of the Chrysanthemum Throne, to create and foster prosperous Japan. May the era of his reign signify openness to the world, the spread of ideas of peace, dialogue and freedom,” said the President.

Almost 200 world leaders and heads of diplomatic missions were invited to attend the inauguration ceremony. Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered a speech on the occasion.

In his congratulations to the Emperor of Japan, the President expressed delight over the close historical and cultural ties between Lithuania and Japan and recalled the visit of Emperor Akihito to Lithuania in 2017. The President informed that Lithuania proclaimed 2020 as the year of the humanist and diplomat Chiune Sugihara.

Tomorrow, the President will meet with Speaker of the House of Representatives Tadamori Oshima, Chairman of Japan-Lithuania Friendship Diet Member’s League Hirofumi Nakasone and honorary consuls of Lithuania. The agenda of the President includes a visit and opening speech at the Lithuanian-Japanese Business Forum, as well as the meeting with executives of major Japanese corporations planning investments in Lithuania.

The First Lady will visit a Tokyo School that fosters relations with Lithuania, will also see Keio University, Center for Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases, and Medical Research and Development Agency.

Naruhito is the 126th Emperor of Japan. This is the first working visit to Japan of the President of Lithuania since 2001.
