Friday, May 31, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with the Vice-President of the European Commission (EC), Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Viviane Reding. The meeting focused on economic situation in the EU and the priorities of Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The President and the Commissioner also talked about the future of Europe.
"Lithuania backs the European Commission's initiative to attach greater importance to the rights of EU citizens. It is essential that all European citizens feel that Europe is their home and that each of them is responsible for its well-being and future," the President said.
An event opening the European Year of Citizens was held in January in Ireland which is currently presiding over the EU Council. Lithuania plans to host a closing conference that will be the final event of Lithuania's presidency of the EU Council.
The meeting touched upon the upcoming elections to the European Parliament and ways to boost citizens' participation in them. The interlocutors also discussed how to promote closer interaction between the civil society and European institutions.
