President Gitanas Nausėda met with Darius Jauniškis, Director of the State Security Department, who informed the President that two Lithuanian citizens – Jevgenij Mataitis and Arstidas Tamošaitis – who were imprisoned in Russia were successfully returned to Lithuania and were on their way back to their families.
Together with the two Lithuanian citizens, a Norwegian citizen Frode Berg was also returned and handed over to the Norwegian Embassy in Lithuania today.
Two Russian citizens were simultaneously transferred to the Russian Federation.
“I thank the Lithuanian officers who professionally and smoothly returned the Lithuanian citizens to their homeland. I am happy that their loved ones finally have a chance to see their husbands, fathers and sons. I thank each and every one for their patience and trust in their country which sees the protection of the rights and freedom of its citizens as a fundamental duty. Any policy becomes meaningless if we fail to see its ultimate purpose – to protect the man and his loved ones from suffering”, said the President.
The exchange of citizens took place today at the Lithuanian-Russian border. The President was constantly informed of the progress of the operation.
Taking into account the recommendations of the Clemency Commission, President Gitanas Nausėda signed a decree on granting pardon to Nikolaj Filipchenko and Sergej Moisejenko who have been released from serving the remaining term of imprisonment based on Article 79(2) of the Penal Code of the Republic of Lithuania.
