Thursday, July 25, Vilnius – President Gitanas Nausėda extended condolences over the passing of Tunisia's first freely elected President, Beji Caid Essebsi.
“It is a great loss to the whole democratic world. The President promoted democratic values and fought relentlessly for human rights. Today, let us remember the true price and meaning of democracy - the driving force behind qualitative changes in our life following the collapse of totalitarian regimes,” the President wrote in his message of condolences.
According to the President, Beji Caid Essebsi was the first Tunisian president who devoted all of his efforts to protect human rights and ensure gender equality across the country and to lead the nation by high ethical standards. Beji Caid Essebsi was elected President of Tunisia in 2014 – the first president after the Arab Spring.
