President congratulated Anders Fogh Rasmussen on assuming the duties of NATO’s Secretary General

Tuesday, August 4, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to Anders Fogh Rasmussen on assuming the position of NATO's Secretary General.

In her letter of congratulations, President Grybauskaitė underscored her support for the efforts of the Secretary General for renewing the Alliance so that it could adequately respond to the security challenges of today and tomorrow. She also accentuated her backing for the priorities outlined by Anders Fogh Rasmussen to the press several days ago, including the new Strategic Concept for the Alliance, assistance to Afghanistan, NATO Partnerships and NATO-Russia relations - all of which constitute issues of key importance for Euro-Atlantic security.

The President pointed out that Lithuania had been conducting a responsible mission in Afghanistan where it was leading the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor Province, underlining that despite the uncertain economic situation that we were facing, our country would continue with this important mission.

"I firmly believe that NATO will continue to be the main guarantor of Lithuania's security and also of the security and stability across the European continent," President Grybauskaitė wrote.
