Monday, August 24, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė participated in the official opening of the Third World Litvak Congress.
Addressing the participants and guests of the Congress, the President underlined the Second World Litvak Congress five year ago was held at a special time for Lithuania - the day of commemoration of the Baltic Way.
"This year is a special year for the Jewish community of Lithuania which celebrates its 20th anniversary. Over these past 20 years, you have set up a strong organisation united by shared goals and objectives, capable of seeking their implementation, and implementing them successfully," the President pointed out.
The President said she was glad that the Third World Litvak Congress that brought together so many prominent personalities was dedicated not only to this anniversary but also to other important dates in the history of Lithuania which celebrates the millennium of the mention of its name in written sources, and Vilnius is the European Capital of Culture.
"I am happy that the whole Lithuania - Lithuanians and Jews - commemorate these important dates together," the President underlined.
President Grybauskaitė noted that Lithuania and Lithuanians had always been, and still were, highly appreciating the contribution made by ethnic or religious communities, Litvaks in particular, into the historic and cultural life of our country and the rest of the world, and into the growth and moral maturity of the contemporary Lithuania and its people.
"Lithuania is, and will be, home to all coming Litvaks of the world," the Head of State assured the audience.
The President underlined that for the past twenty years Lithuania had been trying to rectify the historical mistakes and to repay debts. For the first time in this twenty-year period, the Government has taken a decision and will submit this autumn to the Seimas for consideration a law on the restoration of the title to the existing real property for citizens of the Republic of Lithuania.
"I am very happy that this historical injustice made not in the contemporary Lithuania is being corrected and justice will be ultimately restored for you," the President said.
