Thursday, September 5, Brussels – On the second day of the visit, President Gitanas Nausėda met with President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The meeting focused on the new EU agenda and the multiannual financial framework. Lithuania emphasized that ambitious agenda needed an ambitious approach to funding.
“Cohesion policy, funding of agriculture, infrastructure projects, development of innovation and energy security are among Lithuania’s priorities. Taking into account the Commission’s preliminary proposal to significantly reduce the amount of cohesion and agricultural funds allocated to Lithuania, I called the new President of the Commission to reassess our arguments and the Commission’s preliminary position”, the President said after the meeting with the President-elect of the European Commission.
Lithuania seeks not only greater attention to innovation and development of high technology on the EU agenda, but also adequate financing from the EU budget. The President also presented Lithuania’s achievements in attracting information and financial technology companies to establish and invest in the region. President Nausėda and the President-elect of the Commission also discussed the formation of the new European Commission.
Climate change and sustainable development were also discussed at the meeting.
