President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone call with President Andrzej Duda of Poland to discuss the situation on the Ukrainian-Russian border and coordinate joint actions at the NATO, EU and regional level in order to deter Russia from further escalating the situation.
“We call on Russia to immediately withdraw its forces from the Ukrainian-Russian border, implement the Minsk agreements and cooperate with Ukraine on the basis of international law and mutual respect,” President Gitanas Nausėda said.
The two heads of state discussed the strengthening of relations with the United States when the new U.S. President’s Administration started work. They exchanged views on how to engage this NATO ally more actively in urgent regional security issues.
The conversation also focused on the climate change summit to be held in Washington next week.
In this context, the President of Lithuania placed special emphasis on the unsafe nuclear power plant in Ostrovets and underlined the need to ensure its compliance with international nuclear safety and environmental protection requirements.
The Presidents also discussed the pandemic situation and the progress of vaccination in their countries.
