President Gitanas Nausėda extended congratulations to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğanon of Turkey on the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Turkey.
According to the President, Lithuania and Turkey are historically linked by friendly and goodwill relations, the origins of which date back to the old 15th and 16th centuries. Lithuania highly appreciates the fact that Turkey had never recognized the occupation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union. According to the President, it strengthened our hope of becoming free and restoring independence, the thirtieth anniversary of which we celebrated in the spring. We will always remember this sign of Turkish solidarity and understanding with sincere gratitude.
The Turkish President also congratulated Lithuania on the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Turkey on 17 September 1930. “On behalf of my country, I extend my sincere congratulations to you and the friendly Lithuanian people. Diplomatic relations established in the early years of the Republic of Turkey and our ever-lasting friendship after Lithuania restored its independence were further strengthened by allied ties”, said the Turkish President in his letter wishing continued success and prosperity of our country.
The two Presidents emphasized that Lithuania and Turkey were now close allies in NATO, sharing security threats and challenges and taking joint responsibility for peace and stability in Europe.
“Mr. President, it is my strong hope that our potential for cooperation will reveal many more opportunities to expand contacts and activities across all areas of mutual interest in the spirit of universal values and solidarity, leading to increasingly stronger ties between our states and societies”, said President Nausėda in his letter.
