2012-11-23

Saturday, November 24, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė, welcoming the participants of the Lithuania-Latvia Forum, said that both countries should seek common goals together.

"Unity of the Balts, close cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia on key issues remains relevant in the face of today's challenges we have to address as we share common interests and common future," the President said in her welcome message.

According to the President, Lithuania and Latvia have to speak with one voice at international institutions, defend together the interests of their people, while joint efforts towards greater energy independence of the two countries will lay the foundation for successful economic development in the region.

Dalia Grybauskaitė noted that both states were closely and intensely working on the overriding issues related to security and wellbeing - Lithuania and Latvia have become active members of the NATO. They jointly achieved a permanent status of the NATO air policing mission in the Baltics and the Allies' endorsement of their contingency plans.

The first Congress of the Lithuania-Latvia Forum took place in 2005 in Kaunas. The aim of the forum is to strengthen the bilateral cooperation, preserve the Balts' heritage and identity, and defend common interests at the international level.
