Friday, August 23, Vilnius – President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson of Iceland extended congratulations to Lithuania on the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way.
In his letter, the President of Iceland highlighted friendly cooperation with Lithuania and recalled the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact signed 80 years ago which robbed sovereign states of their freedom and independence and was also a case of use of extreme might in international relations.
“As we recall this tragic episode of our joint history, allow me to express, on behalf of the people of Iceland, our hopes for continued friendship and cooperation with Lithuania, and our wishes for our bright future for your lovey country”, said the President of Iceland in his letter.
The President of Iceland remembered that Iceland admired the forceful show of solidarity as the people of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands expressing their desire for independence on 23 August 1989.
