Thursday, October 10, Kaunas – President Gitanas Nausėda met with German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to discuss bilateral cooperation and key regional security issues.
“Relations between Lithuania and Germany are particularly strong and Germany is a highly reliable Lithuania’s defense partner. Our two countries are allies and partners: we address common emerging challenges together to ensure security and welfare to all the people in Europe”, said the President.
At the meeting with the German Defense Minister, the President emphasized that Germany is also one of Lithuania’s key economic and trade partners. Lithuania recently concluded high-volume agreements with Germany for acquisition of military equipment. According to the President, as bilateral trade and business links as well as cultural and scientific initiatives developed rapidly, people-to-people contacts were also becoming stronger.
Germany leads NATO’s enhanced forward presence battle group deployed in Lithuania and has the greatest presence, i.e., over 600 troops. Currently the battle group is made of over 1,200 soldiers from six countries. NATO’s multinational battalion is integrated into the Lithuanian Mechanized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf that has been affiliated to a German Bundeswehr division.
Lithuania remains Germany’s active and reliable partner in international military missions and operations.
