Wednesday, February 24, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė received the French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Pierre Lellouche, who came to Lithuania on a working visit.
The French Secretary of State for European Affairs passed to the President of Lithuania regards from the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy.
According to Secretary Pierre Lellouche, one of the primary goals of his meeting with the President is to consult and inform Lithuania as a strategic partner of France on France's possible intention to sell a Mistral-class military vessel to Russia.
The French Secretary of State informed the President that France had not received an official request from Russia to sell the Mistral yet, and assured the President that should the deal be ever concluded at all, the ship would be sold to Russia as a civil vessel, without any military equipment.
Such consultations are provided for in the bilateral agreement on strategic partnership signed by the Presidents of France and Lithuania last September.
Taking note of the clarifications given by the French Secretary of State, President Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined the importance of political consultations among strategic partners.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė thanked the Secretary for the NATO Baltic air-policing mission which is currently carried out by France.
The President and the Secretary also discussed bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and France, EU's economic and political issues of concern, and the EU-Russian relations.
