Monday, November 26, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė presented letters of credence to Arūnas Gelūnas, permanent delegate of Lithuania to UNESCO.
According to the President, the incoming permanent delegate to UNESCO will have a responsible task to represent Lithuania and its culture in the world.
The President underlined that it was in Lithuania's interest to ensure the continuity of nationally important cultural and education projects as well as to have new projects initiated.
In the near future, Lithuania will propose to include in UNESCO's list of commemorative dates the dates that are significant to our country - 300th birth anniversary of Kristijonas Donelaitis in 2014 and 250th jubilee of M.K. Oginski in 2015.
The UNESCO World Heritage List includes 4 objects of Lithuania: Vilnius Old Town - the historical centre of Vilnius, archeological settlement Kernavė, the Struve Geodetic Arc, and the Curonian Spit. Lithuania aims to preserve these objects.
Arūnas Gelūnas (43) holds a doctorate in philosophy. In the period 2001 - 2010 he engaged in academic activities at Vytautas Magnus University, Vilnius University, and Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since July 2010, Gelūnas has been Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. The diplomat speaks Russian, English, Polish, Japanese, French and German.
