Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to President of Afganistan on national holiday

Wednesday, August 19, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations on behalf of herself and the people of Lithuania to President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan on the occasion of Independence Day, wishing the people of his country harmony and concord.

"I would like to take this opportunity to express staunch support for you and the citizens of your country who are working for peace, democracy and economic well-being at a time of utmost importance to Afghanistan. It was quite recently that Lithuania, too, was faced with the challenging tasks of strengthening the state and enhancing national and social unity and therefore I would like to wish you courage and wisdom on this difficult path," President Grybauskaitė wrote in her letter of congratulations.

Dalia Grybauskaitė noted that it was symbolic that Afghan Independence Day almost coincided with the presidential elections. She further underlined that President Karzai's active and dynamic work inspired the citizens of Afghanistan to seek resolutely the ultimate ideals of democracy and freedom, expressing her firm belief that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which was celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Independence, would pursue these goals even more strongly.
