Friday, May 28, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated, both personally and on behalf of the Lithuanian people, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and the people of his country on the occasion of Republic Day.
"Lithuania and Azerbaijan, like small countries, are linked by a common interest to ensure the well-being, security and prosperity of their citizens. It is only by acting in a determined, open and constructive way that we can successfully deliver these goals. I am convinced that the development of Lithuanian and Azerbaijani nations, their historical experience and shared interests - even across large distances - serve as a strong foundation for expanding bilateral cooperation," the President wrote in her message of congratulations.
The President underlined that the vision set out in the National Charter, which proclaimed an independent Azerbaijan in 1918, to build a democratic society and friendly relations with all countries continued to be vitally important. She expressed her belief that the joint activities of Lithuania and Azerbaijan within the framework of the European Union's Eastern Partnership programme, and deeper bilateral economic, cultural and political ties could contribute to achieving these targets.
