Tuesday, July 23, Vilnius – President Gitanas Nausėda who is on the working visit to Latvia visited the National Library of Latvia and donated a book “The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in the Lower Castle of Vilnius” that he selected himself.

“This book we give to our Latvian brothers reflects a meaningful page of Lithuania’s past. Let us not forget the history that our nations share”, wrote the President in the book he donated.

The album presents the history of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the restoration of this most important representative residence of Lithuanian rulers, as well as highly valuable, abundant and diverse artifacts and a collection of interior valuables.

The tradition launched in 2018 when Latvia marked the centennial of its state is an opportunity for everyone to donate to the National Library a book that is particularly dear to them with a special message on the cover page. Donated books are placed on an open People’s Shelf accessible to all the readers. The shelf already holds over 15 thousand collected books.

Pope Francis, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Irish, Italian, Croatian, Polish and other world leaders have also donated books to the library on various visits.
