Friday, November 23, Brussels - The European Council decided to have a break in negotiations on the new EU's multiannual financial framework for the period 2014-2020. According to President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who attended the negotiations, this break means that everything will have to be re-negotiated.
In the time of financial hardship for Europe, the member states who are major contributors to the EU budget did not agree with proposed payments and suggested much deeper EU budget cuts. Failing to reach an agreement between the EU member states, the European Commission and the European Parliament, the talks were postponed. The European leaders gave a mandate to President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso to prepare a new proposal on the EU's multiannual financial framework.
The talks will be resumed at the beginning of 2013.
