Lithuania will cooperate with the Council of Europe in search for answer to alleged CIA detention center on its territory

Tuesday, October 20, Vilnius - During her meeting with the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, President Dalia Grybauskaitė said that Lithuania was ready to actively cooperate with the Council of Europe in search for an answer to the allegations that it had hosted a secret US detention center for terror suspects.

According to President Grybauskaitė, an investigation should be launched and answers provided as quickly as possible to protect Lithuania's reputation.

"If this is true, Lithuania has to clean up, accept responsibility, apologize, and promise that it will never happen again. We cannot place Lithuania in a position, for whatever interests, where it may become a target for international terrorists. Therefore, both Lithuania and the United States must provide answers to these questions," President Grybauskaitė told a press conference today.

President Grybauskaitė acquainted Thomas Hammarberg with the amendments to the Law on the Protection of Minors against the Detrimental Effect of Public Information submitted to the Seimas by a presidential working group set up earlier, The amendments are aimed at protecting minors from the harmful impact of public information without violating the freedom of expression and speech.

The Commissioner for Human Rights expressed his support to the President's initiative and favorably assessed the forthcoming discussions in Lithuanian parliament.
