President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Marku Rutte of the Netherlands. The conversation focused on the situation in Belarus, assistance to civil society and the human rights situation in the country. The leaders also discussed the agenda of the European Council meeting on 24-25 September.
The President reminded the Dutch Prime Minister that Lithuania and the other Baltic States had already imposed regional sanctions against the Belarusian regime. President Nausėda briefed the Prime Minister of the Netherlands on the contents of the economic aid package for democratic Belarus initiated by Lithuania, Poland and Romania. The President plans to talk about the support for democratic Belarus at the forthcoming Council meeting.
The President and the Prime Minister discussed the influence imposed by the third countries on the Belarusian authorities and called for active involvement of the civil society in its efforts to bring about democratic change and free elections.
The leaders also exchanged views on other key topics of the forthcoming Council meeting, including the EU's relations with China and the situation in the Mediterranean.
