Gitanas Nausėda at the meeting with the President of the European Commission: joint efforts are needed to strengthen the EU’s Eastern border


President Gitanas Nausėda met with President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Gitanas Nausėda thanked Ursula von der Leyen for constructive cooperation with the European Commission both in the negotiation on the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) in July 2020 and in the development of the Lithuania’s Recovery and Resilience Plan. Under the RRF, Lithuania is expected receive 2.225 billion euros.

“The funds will be the basis for the necessary reforms and investments to strengthen our country, contribute to green, innovative, fair, and robust growth of Lithuania. This is a commitment to our government to invest the funds in a targeted, transparent, and most beneficial way for the Lithuanian people,” Gitanas Nausėda said.

The President of Lithuania and the President of the Commission also discussed the new challenges of illegal migration. Gitanas Nausėda underscored that the Belarusian regime was attempting to use migrants to increase pressure not only on Lithuania but also on the European Union. He stressed the need for joint efforts to strengthen the control of the EU’s Eastern border.

In the conversation with the President of the Commission, Gitanas Nausėda also raised the issue of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant, recalling the threat it poses to the entire European Union and stressing the need for effective implementation of the decisions taken by the European Council to prevent electricity from producers that fail to comply with international nuclear safety standards entering the EU market from third countries. 

At the meeting, the President presented a major event in Lithuanian and European cultural life, the project –“Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022” – and extended an invitation to the President of the European Commission to attend the opening ceremony to be held in Kaunas on 22 January 2022.
