At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, former Prime Minister of Latvia Laimdota Straujuma and former Prime Minister of Sao Tome and Principe Maria do Carmo Silveira joined Council of Women World Leaders.
Mrs. Maria do Carmo Silveira is a former Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe who served from 8 June 2005 to 21 April 2006. She is the country's second female Prime Minister.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who chairs the Council of Women World Leaders met Ms. Straujuma and Ms. Silveira and in Vilnius, during the Women Political Leaders Summit 2018, that was held in June. The President had extended the invitations to join the Council, and together with the CWWL members discussed the activities of the Council and joint input to SDG17.
With Ms. Straujuma and Ms. Silveira joining the CWWL, the Council has expanded to 70 members – current and former heads of states and governments who work jointly to advance the participation of women at the highest levels of decision-making.
