SpeechesRemarks by H.E. Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, at the Life Saving Cross Awards CeremonyLadies and Gentlemen,
Each year as we mark the Memorial Day for the Holocaust Victims, we once again remember the pain and suffering endured by the Jews during World War II. The mass murder of innocent babies, old men and women, little children and their parents is a crime against humanity and against the fundamental right to life. It is a crime that can never be forgiven and that does not have a limitation period. The memory of this tragedy is very distressing to all who hold human life as the highest value. It is especially painful to the Righteous among the Nations who risked their lives and the lives of their families to help the Jews. Their courage is immeasurable. It is a living tribute to humanity and all that goodness stands for.
It is therefore with the greatest respect that I present fifty five Lithuanian citizens with the Life Saving Cross.
In those days of horror and injustice they did not give in to the policy of hate and brutality enforced by a foreign power and did not hesitate to resist it. The men and women awarded here today did not betray their neighbors - they did everything they could to save those doomed to die. They all deserve the greatest of respect and gratitude. In the face of death, they were ready to sacrifice themselves to save others.
Most of those we honor today are no longer among us: they are awarded posthumously. But, with their great hearts and actions, they will forever remain a powerful example of dignity to all of us.
I thank you from my heart for your courage and sacrifice and for continuing to remind us that the human soul and spirit cannot be broken.
You are the pride of our nation and an inspiration to all.
