Address by H.E. Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, at the Ceremony of Presentation of January 13 Medals

Ladies and Gentlemen,

January 13 will always live in our hearts as a day of defending freedom and manifesting national unity. A day when we stood together - oblivious of social, ethnic or religious differences - to protect our homeland and liberty.

It was more than a duty. It was a time of realization that we will preserve our ideals, the future of our children and our own identity only by fighting for and protecting freedom. We defended our fragile independence with the best and dearest that we had and still have: faith in liberty and truth, unwavering resolve to live in dignity and stand up for fundamental national values. The hopes and solidarity of the people in Lithuania prevailed over brutality and force. We will never forget that feeling of togetherness which is still here today to give young people encouragement and self-confidence.

The courage and unity demonstrated by the people during the January events continues to be an inspiring force in dealing with the challenges of today.

Let us work for the good of Lithuania with all our strength so that we never let down our freedom fighters, their spirit of mind and unity of purpose, their hope and faith.

It is my privilege to present you today with the commemorative medals of January 13 and to thank you for your bravery and solidarity.

Please accept my deep respect and good wishes.

Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania
