SpeechesYour Excellency President Bronisław Komorowski, Your Excellency Sejm Marshal Grzegorz Schetyna, Mr. President of Kraków, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is here at this very impressive Monument to the Battle of Žalgiris that, on behalf of the Lithuanian people, I send my greetings and congratulations to our sister nation of Poland on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of our joint historic victory. This is the fourth convention which has brought you together in Vilnius. I know that for you such meetings are intensive working sessions: you not only exchange information about the work done, but share ideas and inspiration for fresh initiatives. I would say that this is the best time for new beginnings. Today we celebrate a very special date in the history of our nation - July 6 - which marks the beginning of Lithuanian statehood. More than seven hundred years ago, Lithuania united under a crown. It was a resolute step made by the Baltic tribes led by Mindaugas on the international arena of those times. It made Lithuania stronger, protected her from enemies who from then on had to speak with us in the language of diplomacy, not the threat of war. On this day of great importance to the nation, which marks the coronation of Lithuania, we have gathered here to honor prominent Lithuanian and foreign nationals who have made a significant contribution to raising civic awareness, spreading scientific thought, expanding the ideals of arts and humanity, and establishing the name of Lithuania in the world. Today we say farewell to one of the most prominent Lithuanian politicians, a sincere and open person, a man of principle, Algirdas Brazauskas – the first directly elected president of Lithuania after re-independence. By the will of history, President Algirdas Brazauskas stood at the helm of state power in difficult and challenging periods for Lithuania which reflected the time of fundamental changes in the whole of Central and Eastern Europe. First of all, I would like to welcome all of you who have come to Vilnius from all over the world. We are proud and honored that the International Association of Universities has chosen Lithuania as the host country for the Conference. The Conference topic - Ethics and Values in Higher Education - is very relevant in today's globalized world. It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all of you, well-known gender equality advocates and professionals, attending this international conference in Vilnius. I am also delighted to acknowledge the presence the Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality at the European Parliament, Eva-Britt Svensson. First, allow me to thank you most sincerely for the warm and gracious hospitality you have extended during this visit. This is the first official visit of the President of Lithuania to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and therefore it holds special significance for me. 2010-06-08 State of the Nation Address by H.E. Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania
I am here to fulfill my constitutional duty to make an annual review of the situation in the country. I watch, analyze and react to the developments in all areas of Lithuania’s life without waiting for special annual occasions. That is how I understand my mission and the objectives of the President’s Office. Therefore, as I was preparing for this report, I ruled out the traditional approach of overviewing each and every sector in consecutive order. We are nine countries sharing the Baltic Sea and our presence in the region is enhanced by Norway and Iceland. The expressed interests of our immediate neighbors, Southern European countries and the United States of America, are also represented in the CBSS by observer states. All of this clearly demonstrates that the Baltic Sea Region is a real, important and dynamic force in Europe. |
