This day of October 3 nineteen years ago, at midnight, hundreds of thousands of Germans gathered in front of the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and elsewhere singing the national song of Germany and flying the black-red-gold flag as they heard the news that the Iron Curtain had finally fallen after the long decades of division and that your country and your nation had reunified. This was an unforgettable and immensely joyful moment after long years of totalitarian oppression and divisions and it brought new hope and inspiration not only for German people but also for the whole of Europe and the entire world.
