Congratulations to you and all the people of Germany on your national holiday, Unity Day! This day of October 3 nineteen years ago, at midnight, hundreds of thousands of Germans gathered in front of the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and elsewhere singing the national song of Germany and flying the black-red-gold flag as they heard the news that the Iron Curtain had finally fallen after the long decades of division and that your country and your nation had reunified. This was an unforgettable and immensely joyful moment after long years of totalitarian oppression and divisions and it brought new hope and inspiration not only for German people but also for the whole of Europe and the entire world.

On behalf of myself and the people of Lithuania, I would like to extend congratulations on the occasion of your country’s national holiday – the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China. I wish you and your country prosperity and success.

Please accept my congratulations on the impressive victory of the Christian Democratic Union and also your personal victory in the German federal election. With the approaching twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall – an event of immense historic significance for your country and the whole of Europe to be celebrated across the entire continent on November 9th – I would like to express my firm belief that the well-deserved trust placed in you by the German voters will precondition a stronger Germany and Europe as well as their economic recovery. I wish you success in forming Germany’s new government.

Allow me to congratulate you, on behalf of myself and the people of Lithuania, on the occasion of Armenia’s national holiday – Independence Day. I wish you and your country prosperity and success.

Please accept my congratulations on you approval by the European Parliament as President of the European Commission. I am very pleased that by making this decision the European Parliament, just like the European Council in June of 2009, gave due credit to your work and efforts in leading the European Commission, particularly in the face of today’s economic and financial downturn, as well as to your resolve to continue strengthening the European Union and to seek its leadership in the world.
